The story that began in the previous chapter continues. Jesus is standing before Pilate as he is being accused by the Jews.

# Then Pilate took Jesus and whipped him
|
|
|
|
Pilate himself did not whip Jesus. Here "Pilate" is a metonym for the soldiers whom Pilate ordered to whip Jesus. Alternate translation: "Then Pilate's soldiers took Jesus out of the room and whipped him" (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-metonymy]])
