# he might find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob

Here "God" is a metonym for the ark of the covenant. God does not live in a place built by humans. David wanted to build a place for the ark, which represented God's presence, so people could go there to worship God. Alternate translation: "he might build a place where people could worship the God of Jacob" (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/translate/figs-metonymy]])
