The Pharisees used the phrase "sinful people" to refer to people who did not keep the law as well as the Pharisees thought they should.
for there were many and they followed him
Possible meanings are 1) "for there were many tax collectors and sinful people who followed Jesus" or 2) "for Jesus had many disciples and they followed him."
Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinful people?
