guilt offering

Definition

The guilt offering was one of several kinds of offerings that God required the Israelites to make. It was a penalty for unintentionally damaging another person's property or for some other accidental wrong behavior.

  • This offering involved the sacrifice of an animal and paying a fine, with silver or gold money.
  • In addition, the person at fault was responsible to pay for any damage that was done.
  • Sometimes guilt offerings were practiced by other nations and cultures in the Bible.
