1.1 KiB

so that your hearts are not burdened

The "heart" here refers to the mind and thoughts of the person. Alternate translation: "so that you are not occupied" (See: rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-metonymy)

are not burdened

Jesus here speaks of the following sins as if they were a physical weight that a person had to carry. (See: rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-metaphor)

excessive drinking ... drunkenness

"drinking too much wine and becoming drunk." Excessive drinking is the action, and intoxication is the effect of that action.

the worries of life

"the things you worry about as you live every day"

that day does not close on you suddenly

The rest of this sentence, "like a trap," is in verse 35. Just as a trap closes on an animal when the animal does not expect it, that day will happen when people do not expect it. Alternate translation: "that day does not happen when you are not expecting it, as when a trap closes suddenly on an animal" or "that day does not surprise you like a trap" (See: rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-simile)

that day

This refers to the day when the Messiah returns. Alternate translation: "the day when the Son of Man comes"
