This chapter describes a feeling of longing, or the waiting in anticipation of the one you love. In 3:1-4 the woman speaks to herself. In the ancient Near East, it was common to describe a woman using words involving animals.

"I had a strong desire to be with him ... loves, but he was not there"
|

# him whom my soul loves
|
|
|
|
"my beloved" (Song of Songs 1:14). |
