# we are walking
The word "walking" is a metaphor for the way a person lives his life. "we are acting" (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-metaphor]])
"we are acting"
# according to the flesh
The word "flesh" is a metonym for the mortal body, which in turn is a metaphor for the person himself. See how you translated it in [2 Corinthians 1:17](../01/17.md). Alternate translation: "according to human standards" or "the way sinful people do" (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-metonymy]])
"according to human standards" or "the way sinful people do". "Flesh" is possibly a metaphor for a person's sinful nature. Paul is not teaching that our physical bodies are sinful. Paul appears to be teaching that as long as Christians are alive ("in the flesh"), we will continue to sin. But our new nature will be fighting against our old nature.
