Possible meanings 1) Paul is being ironic to shame the Corinthians for dividing the people they thought were more important from those they thought were less important. Alternate translation: "For it seems you must have factions among you, so that everyone will know whom you consider to be most important" or 2) Paul means factions are necessary so that God can show those whom he approves.
