Tribes of Israel

The sons of Israel (Jacob)
The sons of Jacob were born in Padan-aram from different mothers, as follows:

The sons of Leah; Reuben (Jacobs firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun
The sons of Rachel; Joseph, and Benjamin
The sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid; Dan, and Naphtali
The sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid; Gad, and Asher

Deuteronomy 33:625 lists the Twelve Tribes:

Reuben
Simeon
Levi

Asher
Joseph (including Ephraim and Manasseh)

  1. The Land of Israel was divided into twelve regions.
However, the tribes receiving land differed from the biblical tribes.
  2. The tribe of Levi had no land appropriation, but each tribe allocated part of their territory for the Levites.
They governed the six cities of refuge, and they were responsible for the sacrifices and other duties in the Temple in Jerusalem.
  3. There was no land allotment for the tribe of Joseph, but Ephraim and Manasseh, were two sons of Joseph, received their father's allotment.

The Twelve Tribes receiving an allotment of land were:

(Levi is removed)
(Joseph is removed)
Reuben
Simeon
Ephraim (added as son of Joseph)
Judah
Issachar
Zebulun
Dan
Naphtali
Gad
Asher
Manasseh (added as son of Joseph)
Benjamin

In New Testament, the Twelve Tribes of Israel are referred to twice in the gospels and twice in the Book of Revelation.

This list of the Twelve Tribes in Revelation 7:1-8 is somewhat different from the Old Testament list. Some Tribes were removed, or replaced by others.
