# Son of God
The words "Son of God" are used to talk about Jesus Christ. He is also often called "the Son."
In the Old Testament, God promised King David that King David would have a descendant who God would call his own son (see: 2 Samuel 7:12-14; Matthew 1:1-17). Jesus mother was Mary. She became pregnant by the Holy Spirit even though she was a virgin (see: Matthew 1:18-25). Jesus became a person by the power of God (see: Luke 3:23-38).
The Bible calls Jesus Gods only Son (see: John 3:16). He is different from Christians even though Christians are also called sons of God (see: Romans 8:14; Galatians 3:26). Jesus is called the “firstborn” (see: Colossians 1:15). This does not mean Jesus was born first. Jesus is eternal and was not born. Here “firstborn” means that Jesus deserves more honor than anyone else called a son of God.
Jesus the Son is one with God the Father (see: John 10:30). He is equally God with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit (see: Matthew 28:19). The Son thinks the same things and does the same things as the Father does (see: John 5:19; 14:10; Colossians 1:13-15, 19; Hebrews 1:3). This special relationship between God the Father and God the Son is a mystery to humans.
Jesus was born on earth in the same way humans are born. That is, a woman gave birth to him. However, Jesus was in heaven before he was born on earth (see: John 8:58; 17:5). He was not born to God the Father in the way that human sons are born to fathers. Jesus has always existed.
God the Father chose the word “son” to talk about Jesus relationship with him. Jesus loves and obeys God the Father in a similar way that human sons love and obey their fathers. However, Jesus loves and obeys God the Father perfectly.
