Sea

The word sea is used to talk about a place where a lot of water has gathered. Some common seas in the Bible are the Red Sea, the Sea of Galilee, and the Great Sea, which is the Mediterranean Sea.

There was a very large bowl full of water outside of the temple that King Solomon built. This bowl was called “the sea” (see: 1 Kings 7:23).

More Information About This Topic

Some people of the ancient near east were afraid of seas because of their size and danger. In the Bible, the sea was sometimes used as a symbol of chaos or evil. The beast from Revelation was said to come out of the sea (see: Revelation 13:1; see also: Daniel 7:2-3). This was a symbol that this creature was evil.

Jesus was master of the sea. He made other people know this when he walked on the water and when he made the wind and waves stop (see: Matthew 14:22-33; Mark 4:35-41; 6:45-52).
