Sexual Immorality

The words “sexual immorality” are used to talk about all sexual activity that God taught was wrong. Older English Bible versions call this "fornication." This includes sexual acts such as:

  • Prostitution: a person being payed to have sex with someone, often as an act of worship to false gods (see: Deuteronomy 23:17-18; 1 Corinthians 6:15-20)
  • Adultery: a married person having sex with someone who is not their husband or wife (see: Exodus 20:14; Matthew 19:18; Mark 7:21-23)
  • Homosexuality: a person having sex with someone of the same gender (see: Leviticus 18:22; Romans 1:24-27; see also: Genesis 19:1-29)
  • Incest: a person having sex with a close family member such as a parent, child, or sibling (see: Leviticus 18:1-16)
  • Bestiality: a person having sex with an animal (see: Leviticus 18:23)

The Bible also uses “sexual immorality” as a metaphor to talk about the people of God worshiping false gods. When Gods people worshiped idols, it was as if they committed adultery against God (see: Ezekiel 6:9), or as if they were prostitutes (see: Hosea 4:12).
