# Adopt (Adoption)
The words “adopt” and “adoption” are used to talk about people legally making a child belong to their family. These people are not that child’s biological parents. That is, they are not the people who made and gave birth to the child.

In the Bible, the words “adopt” and “adoption” are also used as metaphors. They are used to talk about God making people who believe in Jesus belong to his family. God makes them his spiritual sons and daughters. Christians are co-heirs with Jesus. That is, they have all the benefits of being sons and daughters of God (see: Romans 8:15-17; 9:4; Galatians 4:5; Ephesians 1:5).
