the Day of the Preparation

"the day when people got ready for the Jewish day of rest called the Sabbath"

who had come with Jesus out of Galilee

"who had traveled with Jesus from the region of Galilee"

followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid

They returned

"The women went to the houses where the women were staying"

Because they had had no time to honor Jesus by putting fragrant spices and ointments on his body on the day he died, they were going to do it on the morning of the first day of the week. AT: "prepared spices and ointments to put on Jesus' body" (See: rc://en/ta/man/translate/figs-explicit)

they rested

"the women did no work"

according to the commandment

"according to the Jewish law" or "as the Jewish law required." They were not allowed to prepare his body on the Sabbath according to the law.
