- the eleven - This refers to Jesus' apostles. Judas was not with them.
- saying, "The Lord is risen indeed - The eleven apostles and those who were with them were saying this.
- So they told - "so the two men told"
- the things that happened on the way - This refers to Jesus appearing to them while they were on their way to the village of Emmaus.
