# knew their thoughts
Jesus knew what they were thinking either supernaturally or because he could see them talking to each other.

# Why are you thinking evil in your hearts?
Jesus used this question to rebuke the scribes. Here "hearts" refers to their minds or their thoughts. Alternate translation: "Do not think evil thoughts." (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-rquestion]] and [[rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-metonymy]])
