1.2 KiB

I will follow you

"I will join you as a disciple" or "I am ready to follow you" or "I promise to follow you"

first allow me to say farewell

This could be translated as "before I do that, let me say goodbye" or "let me first tell them that I am leaving."

them that are at my house

"my household" or "the people at my home"

No one…fit for the kingdom of God

Jesus states this as a general principle that applies to every person. The implied meaning to the man, however is "You will not be fit for my kingdom if you focus on the people in your past instead of on following me." (See: rc://en/ta/man/translate/figs-explicit)

having put his hand to the plow

"having started to plow his field." Farmers use a plow to prepare their field so they can put seeds in it. Communities that do not know about plows could translate this in a general way: "having started to prepare his field." (See: rc://en/ta/man/translate/translate-unknown)

looking back

A person who is looking back while plowing cannot guide the plow where it needs to go. They must focus on looking forward in order to plow well.

fit for

"useful for" or "suitable for"
