# The earth will stagger like a drunkard, and it will sway back and forth like a hut

These similes emphasize how the earth will shake back and forth, which is a metaphor for how sin will cause the people of the earth to suffer. (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-simile]])

# Its sin will be heavy on it and it will fall and never rise again

This speaks of the earth as if it were a person and transgressions were a heavy object. The person tries to carry the heavy weight but the weight causes the person to fall and not be able to stand back up. Here the earth represents the people of the earth who cause Yahweh to destroy the earth because of their sins. Alternate translation: "The sins of the people are many and so Yahweh will destroy the earth, and the earth will be like a person who falls and cannot get back up" (See: [[rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-metaphor]] and [[rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-metonymy]])
