Jeremiah 09 Translation Questions
Q? Why does the prophet want to weep?
A. He wants to weep because so many of his people have been killed. [9:1]
Q? Why does he want to abandon his people?
A. He wants to abandon them because they are adulterers and traitors. [9:2]
Q? What do the sinful people say?
A. They say false things. [9:3]
Q? Why should each of them guard against their neighbors and brothers?
A. They should guard against them because every brother and neighbor is a deceiver. [9:4]
Q? Why are the people exhausted?
A. They are exhausted from committing iniquity. [9:5]
Q? Why does Yahweh want to test his people?
A. He wants to test them because they lie to their neighbors. [9:8]
Q? What will the prophet sing?
A. He will sing funeral songs and mourning songs for the mountains and the meadows. [9:10]
Q? What will Yahweh make of Jerusalem and Judah?
A. He will turn them into ruined places. [9:11]
Q? What will the land be like after it has perished?
A. It will be like the wilderness, and no one will pass through it. [9:12]
Q? What have the people done to displease Yahweh?
A. They have abandoned his law and they do not listen to him. [9:13]
Q? What does Yahweh say he will do to the Israelites?
A. He will make them as unhappy as people who have nothing but bitter things to eat and drink. Then he will drive them from their homes and have them killed. [9:16]

A. They should sing sad songs so that the people will cry. [9:17-18]

A. They are greatly ashamed. [9:19]

A. People should be proud that they know Yahweh. [9:23]

A. He acts with covenant loyalty, justice, and righteousness. [9:24]

A. He will punish the Israelites because they are circumcised only in their body and not in their heart. [9:25-6]
Q? Why will Yahweh punish the other people?
A. He will punish them because even their bodies are uncircumcised. [9:26]
