My email to Drew 1/29/2024
Hi Drew.
MaryEllen asked me to check whether the footnote for Luke 2:33 should say "the mother" or "his mother." I wonder if the note about Jesus' mother should be there at all. I also wonder if the note about his father should be corrected.
ULB: 33 His father and mother* were amazed at what was said about him.
Footnote: Some copies of the ancient Greek text add to the text the name of his father, Joseph; and some do not have the mention of the mother. The most reliable copies have his father and mother.
This website https://greeknewtestament.net/lk2-33, shows the following variations:
Ἰωσὴφ καὶ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ
ο πατηρ αυτου και η μητηρ αυτου
ο Ϊωσηφ· και η μηρ αυτου
ο πατηρ αυτου και η μητηρ
Would you have a way to find out if any manuscripts add his name?
Would you have a way to find out if any leave out any mention of Jesus' mother?
Would it be good to change the footnote to this?
Some copies of the ancient Greek text have Joseph instead of His father.
Susan

Hi Drew and Mel,
I just noticed that BibleHub has a bunch of Greek texts. They all have either "his father" or "Joseph" but not both. And they all have "mother."

You can delete
and some do not have the mention of the mother. The most reliable copies have his father and mother.

I'd also like to change the first sentence in the footnote because I cannot find any evidence that it is true as it is.
Current Footnote:
Some copies of the ancient Greek text add to the text the name of his father, Joseph.
Suggestions:
Some copies of the ancient Greek text have Joseph instead of His father.
or
Some copies of the ancient Greek text have his father's name, Joseph.
Drew's reply 1/30/2024
I do not have an opinion either way
My reply 1/30/2024
Ok. Thanks.
I like the second one because it does not indicate whether or not "Joseph" is added to "his father" or replaces it.
MaryEllen: I agree with the reasoning for the second one.
1/30/24 In response to consultation above, in June branch, shortened footnote to "Some copies of the ancient Greek text have his father's name, Joseph."
