# stone, stoned, stones, stoning # ## Definition: ## A stone is a small rock. To "stone" someone is to throw stones and larger rocks at that person with the intention of killing him. A "stoning" is an event in which someone was stoned. * In ancient times, stoning was a common method of executing people as punishment for crimes they had committed. * God commanded the Israelite leaders to stone people for certain sins, such as adultery. * In the New Testament, Jesus forgave a woman caught in adultery and stopped people from stoning her. * Stephen, who was the first person in the Bible to be killed for testifying about Jesus, was stoned to death. * In the city of Lystra, the apostle Paul was stoned, but he did not die from his wounds.
