ULB Mat 6:16-18
16 "When you fast, do not have a sad face as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces so that they may appear to people to be fasting. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face 18 so that you may not appear to people to be fasting, but only to your Father who is in secret;
Current note for Matt 6:16
they disfigure their faces
The hypocrites would not wash their faces and would not comb their hair. They did this purposely to draw attention to themselves so that people would see them and give them honor for fasting.
Suggested Change: Give a little background for why the hypocrites disfigured their faces and an alternate translation.
they disfigure their faces
Sometimes people fasted and let their face and hair look dirty when they were very sorry for their sins. But hypocrites made their faces look dirty because they wanted other people to know that they were fasting and to think that they were very good. Alternate translation: "they make their faces look dirty" or "they put ashes on their faces"
