When working on the ULB issue that Henry posted for these verses, I noticed the notes.

12:41 this generation of people
This refers to the people living during the time Jesus was preaching.

12:42 this generation
This refers to the people living during the time Jesus was preaching.

Should we specify that this means the Jews living during the time of Jesus? I don't think this verse means all people on the planet living during the time of Jesus.

Yes. I think that would be good.

I wonder about v 39
\v 39 But Jesus answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign. But no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet.

An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign ... given to it
Jesus is speaking to his present generation. Alternate translation: "You are an evil and adulterous generation who demands signs from me ... given to you" (See: rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-123person)

adulterous generation
Here "adulterous" is a metaphor for people who are not faithful to God. Alternate translation: "unfaithful generation" or "godless generation" (See: rc://en/ta/man/jit/figs-metaphor)

For the first note, maybe change "his present generation" to "his present generation of Jews."

I don't think it changes the translation, but I think it can help the translators understand the passage better.

What about for the first note "Jesus is speaking to the Jews of his present generation." That seems to flow better to me.

If we all still agree here, I will make the changes.

I agree with clarifying that Jesus was talking to/about Jews -- not to everyone who lived during that time.

For v 39, I think the word "present" could be confusing.

In verse 39 should it be just "speaking to the Jews of his generation"?
