# Greed (Covet)
The word “greed” is used to talk about a person wanting something too much. That is, the person wants a thing more than that person should want it. Or, he wants more than what he needs. Someone who does this is said to be a “greedy” person. Usually, a greedy person wants money or certain things.
“Coveting” is similar to being greedy. A person who covets something wants something that does not belong to them. The Bible teaches that coveting is wrong (see: Deuteronomy 5:21; Romans 1:29).

God does not want people to be greedy. Jesus warned people that they cannot both serve God and be greedy for money (see: Luke 16:11-13). Paul taught that money is not evil. However, if a person is greedy or loves money too much, the person may do evil things to get money (see: 1 Timothy 6:9-10).

Peter told Christians to be aware of teachers who taught wrong things about God. These were false teachers who were greedy and wanted people to give them money (see: 2 Peter 2:3).
Paul wrote that Christians and church leaders should not be greedy (see: Ephesians 5:3, 5; 1 Timothy 3:3, 8; Titus 1:7). Instead, all Christians should want to give money to people who need it (see: Romans 12:8; 2 Corinthians 9:11; 1 Timothy 6:18).
