A proverb is a short statement that teaches something to people. Proverbs are easy to remember and to repeat. Often a proverb talks about things in people's lives. Some proverbs are very easy to know but some proverbs are not easy to understand.

King Solomon was very wise. He wrote over 1,000 proverbs. Many of these proverbs are in the Old Testament book of Proverbs. Jesus also used proverbs when he taught people (see: Matthew 8:20; Luke 7:35; 17:37).

Proverbs were not to be followed in every situation. Instead, they gave help to people. Proverbs were not the same as rules given by a prophet.
