# Temple Courts

The words “courtyard” and “court” are used to talk about an area that is surrounded by walls and has no roof. The tabernacle was surrounded by one courtyard which had walls made of thick, cloth curtains around it (see: Exodus 27:9-19).

The temple area had three courtyards. There was one courtyard for the priests, one for Jewish men, and one for Jewish women. These inner courtyards were surrounded by a low stone wall. These courtyards were separated from the outer courtyard where Gentiles were permitted to worship (see: 1 Kings 7:12).
