The conscience is the part of a person that helps the person know whether they are doing the right thing or doing the wrong thing. God gave people a conscience to help them know the difference between what is right and what is wrong.

A person who obeys God is said to have a “blameless,” a “good,” or a “clean” conscience (see: Acts 23:1; 24:16; 1 Timothy 1:5; 3:9).

A person who disobeys God is said to have a “seared” conscience (see: 1 Timothy 4:2). That is, a person who disobeys God is ignoring their conscience. This person stops feeling guilty for doing what is wrong. This person’s conscience is called a corrupt conscience (see: Titus 1:15). This person’s conscience stops helping this person know what is right and what is wrong.

In the Bible, sometimes the word “heart” is used to talk about a person’s conscience. In English, the conscience is in someone’s mind or head.
