# Hades (Sheol)
The words “Hades” and “Sheol” are used in the Bible to talk about death and the place where the souls of people go when they die. The words “Hades” and “Sheol” are similar words.
The Hebrew word “Sheol” is often used in the Old Testament to write about the place where people go after they die.
The Greek word “Hades” is used in the New Testament to write about the place where people who rebel against God go after they die (see: Matthew 11:23; Luke 16:23).

#### More Information About This Topic
The authors of the New Testament wrote about Hades being “down.” They also wrote about heaven being “up” (see: Matthew 11:23; 14:19; Luke 10:15). Heaven is the place where the souls of people who believed in Jesus go after they die.

Hades is a place of waiting. People wait there until the day of judgment (see: Revelation 20:13). People who did not love God are tormented while they wait there (see: Luke 16:23). On the day of judgment, those who did not love God will be put in the Lake of Fire. Lake of Fire is another name for Hell. Hades will also be put in the Lake of Fire (see: Revelation 20:14-15).
