# Call (Calling)

When a person calls to someone else, they are telling that person to come to them or to listen to them. The words "call to" and "call out" mean to say something loudly to someone who is not nearby (see: Matthew 9:27). A person who “calls out” to God or “calls on the name of the Lord” is praying to God and asking him for help.

The word “call” can also be used to talk about naming something. For example, God called the light “day.” That is, God gave light the name “day” (see: Genesis 1:5).

God also calls people. God calls people to belong to him (see: Acts 2:39; Romans 1:6; 8:30). That is, God wants people to believe in Jesus (see: 1 Corinthians 1:9; Galatians 1:6). God calls people who belong to him to be holy (see: Romans 1:7; 1 Corinthians 1:2; Ephesians 4:1-3). God also calls people to serve him in specific ways. For example, God called Paul to be an apostle (see: Romans 1:1; See also: Ephesians 4:1-13).
