When someone "fears" or is "afraid," the person feels something bad because someone or something is going to harm them or someone else.

To "fear" can also mean to give great honor to a person who leads other people. The words "fear of God" and "fear of the Lord" mean to give great honor to God by obeying him (see: Acts 9:31; 13:26). This fear comes from knowing that God is holy and he hates sin (see: Luke 12:5; 2 Corinthians 7:1). A person who does not fear God is a person who does not obey and honor God (see: Romans 3:18). The Bible says that a person who fears God will become wise (see: Proverbs 1:7). The Bible also says that God will bless the person who fears him (see: Psalms 31:19; 112:1; Luke 1:50; Revelation 11:18).
