The word “dragon” is used only in the book of Revelation. A “dragon” is a large, fierce, reptile-like creature. For Jewish people, it was a symbol of evil and chaos. The word dragon is also used to talk about the devil or Satan (see: Revelation 12:9).

The dragon in Revelation may be the same thing called “Leviathan” in other books of the Bible (see: Job 3:8; 41:1,10 ,12; Psalm 74:14; 104:26; Isaiah 27:1). Leviathan is also a large, reptile-like creature that comes out of the sea. It is also called “the great sea monster” (see: Ezekiel 29:3).
