- where he had been brought up - This could be translated as "where his parents had raised him" or "where he grew up" or "where he lived when he was as a child."
- As was his custom - "As he normally did." It was his usual practice to go to the synagogue on the Sabbath day.
- The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him - This can also be translated with an active clause, as in "Someone gave him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah." (See en:ta:vol2:translate:figs_activepassive)
- scroll of the prophet Isaiah - This refers to the book of Isaiah written on a scroll. Isaiah had written the words many years before, and someone else had copied them onto a scroll.
