* **where he had been brought up** - This could be translated as "where his parents had raised him" or "where he grew up" or "where he lived when he was as a child".
* **As was his custom** - "As he normally did". It was his usual practice to go to the synagogue on the Sabbath day.
* **The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him** - This can also be translated with an active clause, as in "Someone gave him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah." (See [[en:ta:vol2:translate:figs_activepassive]])
* **scroll of the prophet Isaiah** - This refers to the book of Isaiah written on a scroll. Isaiah had written the words many years before, and someone else had copied them onto a scroll.
* **the place where it was written** - "the place in the scroll where it said" or "the place in the scroll with these words"
